Happy Holidays!

P.E. has been a lot of fun lately.  We have been working on team building skills, sportsmanship and integrity.  We have also snuck a few dodgeball games in this past week!!

We will begin T ball when we get back from the holiday break and then kickball since we will know how to run the bases by then.

Have a wonderful holiday season!!!

Please Wear Sneakers to P.E.

Dear Parents,

Soccer is going really well and the children are learning a lot!  We just finished using different body parts to control the ball such as our thigh (quadriceps), head (frontal bone), chest (between clavicals). We have learned trapping the ball, dribbling in between cones while keeping the ball close to us. Keeping the ball in control so the other team does not take the ball from us. Shooting at a target and trying to score a point, scoring a goal, against the other team.

Now it is time for line soccer where they will learn different positions and try to score against the other team.  Next week we will begin a soccer tournament!

Please have your child bring a water bottle and proper SHOES!!!  Thanks!!!!  I just want our little ones to have safe running support!

SOCCER!!!!

My student's are so excited to have begun our soccer unit.  We just learned how to use our instep to pass the ball and two different ways to trap it.  We aimed the ball at a target and finished with a fun activity that involved teamwork, cooperation and leadership!

Please make sure they are wearing proper foot attire.  Mary Jane's will NOT work for soccer and unfortunately they will not be able to participate if they are not in their proper gear.  Thank you for your cooperation.

This is going to be a great unit!!!
2014 Archway Holiday Hope and Relief Effort

Our goal this year collectively as an Archway Arete community is to provide relief to the town of Hyder Arizona.  The town of Hyder, located in Yuma County, was once a World War II desert training ground for General Patton’s troops, but is now known as a ghost town.  It is populated today by hardworking shrimp, tilapia, and date farmers.  Income is very low and with only one general store the people of the town face many challenges to meet daily nutrition, housing, and hygiene needs.

The drive is being run by the Veselovsky family, one of our own Archway families and we are asking the rest of Archway Arete community if they can generously donate the following items to the people of the town of Hyder, Arizona during this holiday season:

Kindergarten:  Dental hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash
First Grade:  Toilet paper & paper towels
Second Grade:  Canned food
Third Grade:  Dry rice, dry beans, dry pasta
Fourth Grade:  Flour, sugar, oats
Fifth Grade:  Hygiene items such as deodorant, shampoo, conditioner & body wash

You may begin dropping off collections to the classroom starting on Monday, November 17, 2014.  The collection will end on, Friday December 5, 2014.  Thank you in advance for your generous support and greathearted effort.

Hand Ball This Week

We have switched over to handball for the week.  This activity works on throwing and catching skills, exercising and shooting at a target.  We work on friendship and teamwork during this contact activity, so we learn to have good sportsmanship.

Our virtue of the month is COURAGE!!!  Mrs. Pantalena said many great things about courage and we are working on those four things in my classroom.

Please make sure your child has proper foot attire for my class, because we are starting soccer very soon.  Unfortunately your child will not be able to participate if they do not have the proper shoes.

Thank you,

Volleyball!!!

We have begun our volleyball unit where my students will learn how to bump, set, serve and spike properly.  They will learn scoring and proper rotation in a volleyball game.

I mix my coaching techniques with the Middle School Arete Coach and the High School Arete Coach.  We work together to make sure our student's are growing through our program already knowing the fundamentals of each sport from P.E.,which will improve our overall athletic program K-12.

My students are having a great time learning all of these new skills!!

Dodgeball

If you read this blog you might be aware that I will not always follow the month to month sport as I posted during curriculum night.  Although I will get through all the sports I posted, sometimes things come up like half days and holidays.  Either way my students will have a full variety of skills and techniques that I teach them in everything that we do in P.E.

This week we are playing dodgeball!
These are some of the things we work on in dodgeball:

  • Throwing over hand.
  • Throwing under hand.
  • Catching.
  • Dodging.
  • Knowing where other players are.
  • Spatial awareness.
  • Playing defense.
  • Playing offense.
  • Aiming at a target below shoulder.
  • Teamwork and Sportsmanship.
  • Integrity and perseverance.
  • Problem solving.
  • Having Fun and Exercising
Dodgeball is high energy and my student's have a great time playing.  This is an amazing work out for them!!

Hockey!

Today we have begun our new unit in Hockey.  We will learn how to hold a hockey stick properly and safely.  Passing will be our first skill that we work on and aiming at a target.  Next we will work on stick handling (dribbling or pushing a puck/ball) and then shooting on net.  Looking forward to teaching this unit!

Please make sure your children have the proper foot gear.  They must wear athletic shoes in my P.E. class.  Notes will be sent home next week if they do not have on the proper foot attire.
